Prevention is the best defense. Follow these essential guidelines to protect yourself and your loved ones.
Replace batteries at least once a year, and replace the entire unit every ten years. A working smoke alarm can cut your risk of dying in a fire in half.
Map two exits from every room and practice your escape route with your family at least twice a year. Make sure everyone knows to stop, drop, and roll.
Place an ABC-rated extinguisher in your kitchen, garage, and workshop. Learn the PASS technique: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep.
Cooking is the leading cause of home fires. Stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling, or broiling, and keep flammable items away from the stovetop.
Have chimneys and furnaces inspected annually. Keep space heaters at least three feet from anything that burns, and never leave them on overnight.
Keep gasoline, propane, and cleaning supplies in well-ventilated areas away from heat sources. Use metal containers with tight-fitting caps.
